Completion of NCEA Level 2 to a good standard (3 merits or better)

Course Outline:

English is not compulsory at Year 13, but in practice many students find it useful to do English because good communication skills are an increasingly important requirement for many tertiary courses and careers.  Students can choose one of the following options:

            Year 13 English (English 1)

            Year 13 English (English 2)

            Repeat NCEA Level 2 or NCEA Level 1

Year 13 English, English 1:

Concepts and skills acquired so far are extended in a course that is aimed at presenting challenging material in a way that provides a transition to tertiary learning.  Students are encouraged to show initiative by participating actively in class discussion and extending their study of English outside the classroom.  There is a combination of internal and external assessment in this course.

Year 13 English ,  English 2:

English 2 covers most of the internal Unit and Achievement Standards offered in 13 English.  While students may attempt the external Achievement Standards, the primary focus of the course is on transferable communication skills and completing the internal standards offered.

Where Does It Lead?

Year 13 English (Level 3) aims to equip students with the language skills appropriate for University study and for subjects with a high component of English skills in them.

Year 13 English 2 aims to provide university entrance through English and provide a foundation of skills which will allow students to attempt a variety of subjects where English skills are not of paramount importance.
