Entry Requirements:
A student entering Year 11 must do a course in English. Most students will follow the full NCEA Level 1 course. Some students, who may experience difficulty with this full programme, may do a combination of Achievement Standards and Units Standards.
Course Outline:
The Year 11 English Course uses a similar approach to that followed in the Year 9 and 10 courses, and builds on the skills already covered at these two levels. Reading and writing are considered particularly important skills. The skills of speaking, listening, viewing and presenting are also important. Put simply, the course aims to develop a student’s use and understanding of language in a variety of situations.
Assessment Outline:
About 50% of the course offered for Year 11 is internally assessed (IA). The remainder will be assessed externally (EA) at the end of the year.
Where Does It Lead?
In 2009:
Students may need to repeat NCEA Level 1.
If they have achieved to a satisfactory level in Year 11, attempting Level 2 NCEA.
As a general guide 3 merits or better at Level 1 tasks are necessary to progress to the next level.
Attempting Year 12 English 2,
which is easier than the other Year 12 course and incorporates a combinatio n of Unit Standards.
