Course Outline:
The programme is made up of three distinct areas:
Personal and Social Development: Opportunities to develop independence, self-confidence, leadership skills and responsibility are constantly presented and evaluated. The main goal of the programme is the improvement of self-esteem and the development of team work and life skills.
Outdoor Pursuits: These include;
water survival and rescue skills- Bronze Star or Bronze Medallion Award
bush craft and tramping
Search and Rescue
climbing and skiing
challenge ropes course activities
These activities are taken to a higher level than the Year 11 course.
Safety: With the emphasis on;
weather
mapping
navigation
search and rescue and radio use
and an appreciation of the beauty and hazards we live in and how to manage these risks.
Special Requirements:
Some of the outdoor activities involve evaluations outside school hours. There is a five day long bush craft / search and rescue camp at Mount Aspiring and two days cross country skiing at the Waiorau Nordic Ski Area. A half day is also spent on a practical navigation exercise near Alexandra. These are all assessed. All specialist equipment is provided, but suitable outdoor clothing will be needed for outdoor camps.

20 Credits: Internal Assessment (IA) – practical with theoretical components.
Achievement Standards and instructing level Unit Standards
External Awards Assessment (EA) – Bronze Star life saving award
National Award in Outdoor Recreation (Level 2)
The National Award in Outdoor Recreation (Level 2) through the Sport, Fitness and Recreation Industry Training Organisation (SFRITO) is for students who complete 20 plus credits in selected outdoor activities. This can be via Year 11 and 12 Outdoor Education or Year 12 OE and Year 13 Adventure Based Learning. This is an exciting development for our students and a useful addition to their CV’s.
Eleven credits from this Year 12 course can contribute to this valuable industry award.
Out of Class Expectations and Commitments
Students are expected to take part in all practical activities and trips. Where they miss a trip, students are expected to provide a medical certificate to explain their absence, and to allow for the possibility of other assessment.
Where Does It Lead?
The Course can be considered an end in itself, concentrating around personal development. Skills learned have job opportunities in adventure, tourism, recreation, Park Services. It can also be seen as an introduction to the Year 13 Level 3 Physical and Outdoor Education course, or to the Year 13 Adventure Based Leadership Course. The social/personal skills gained apply to most job situations and are aimed to meet current employer needs.
