Course Outline:

This course, run by the Outdoor Education and Physical Education Departments is an opportunity for Year 13 students to develop leadership and team work skills and to receive credits under the National Framework.


The Outdoor Education segment is made up of Outdoor Recreation Industry Unit Standards.  Students gain recognition for work in adventure based learning and risk management and first aid.  The course content is designed to increase self esteem, develop team working skills, develop and practice leadership skills, develop trust and respect for others.  There is usually a four day camp based at Mt Aspiring during Week 4 - Term 2.  This is an opportunity to contribute to the camp through work projects and landscaping.


The Physical Education component is made up of three modules.  During Term One and Two students will examine their current lifestyle and then plan, implement and evaluate a personal exercise training programme.


The winter terms provide students with the opportunity to develop leadership and coaching skills through their involvement in Kiwi Sport.


Term Four concludes with students participating in a lawn bowls sport education module.  The skills of umpiring, organising a mini tournament and developing personal physical skills will be encouraged.


Adventure Based Learning (ABL) incorporates several outdoor recreation Unit Standards and is subject to additional Unit Standards in climbing depending on class size.


Assessment Outline:

Unit Standards  - Students receive credits in adventure based learning as well as Kiwi Sport leadership experience.  They also receive a Testimonial outlining their involvement and strengths in the Course.


National Award in Outdoor Recreation (Level 2)

Those who have completed Year 11 or Year 12 Outdoor Education may find that completion of the first aid unit makes them eligible for this valuable industry award.










                                                                                                        
























Out of Class Expectations and Commitments

Students are expected to take part in all practical activities and trips.  Where they miss a trip, students are expected to provide a medical certificate to explain their absence, and to allow for the possibility of other assessment.


Where Does It Lead?

The Course concentrates around personal development and leadership skills.  As such it has immediate applications for many careers involving high levels of such skills: adventure, tourism, management, education.  It can also be seen as a valuable way to enhance students’ curriculum vitaes, as the leadership and team work skills are specifically designed to meet current employer needs.


For those pursuing a career in the Outdoors some of the units make up the Sport Fitness and Recreation Industry Training Organization (SFRITO) - National Award in Risk Management Level 3.
