Course Outline:
Year 13 Physical and Outdoor Education is an extension of the Year 12 Level 2 NCEA Physical Education and Outdoor Education programmes. It is a Level 3 NCEA course with students eligible for dual assessment in Level 3 Achievement Standards and Outdoor Recreation Unit Standards.
The course is designed to extend students in a varied and fun setting. The Achievement Standards and Unit Standards are based around three areas of practical work:
•Developing personal fitness (Achievement Standards 3.1, 3.2)
•Nordic (x-country) skiing (Achievement Standards 3.4, 3.5)
•Bouldering (climbing) (Achievement Standard 3.3)
The personal fitness/well-being is linked to skiing and bouldering and is a mixture of practical and theory work. Students learn new physical skills and look at a range of physical, safety and well being issues that affect both the individual and society in general.
Some Unit Standards will be offered alongside the Achievement Standards for Nordic skiing and climbing so students will have an opportunity to gain additional practical performance credits for their Level 3 NCEA Certificate.
Special Requirements:
Although it is preferable to have studied either Physical Education or Outdoor Education in Year 12, with a little extra effort it can be commenced in Year 13. However a pass in either L2 NCEA Physics, Biology, or Chemistry is recommended.
Practical requirements involve five days away from school for cross-country skiing training with students participating in a secondary schools race assessment. No special equipment is required apart from suitable clothing. Students will stay overnight at the Snow Farm Lodge for one night prior to the inter school assessment day. All students taking Year 13 POE are expected to be at all practical ski events.
Note:
This course is not designed to produce Olympic class skiers or superstar rock climbers; it is designed for anyone prepared to study and to ‘have a go’ at the activities. Our philosophy is ‘Challenge by Choice’ – with supportive goal setting, you the student set your own challenges so that what you get out of the course is what you are prepared to put in. Practical Assessment is based on your personal performance and is not compared to other students.
Assessment Outline:
Level 3 NCEA Achievement Standards.
NZQA Unit Standards in Cross Country Skiing as an additional option.
Students may also choose Nordic skiing units at a level to suit their perceived ability as we are able to dual assess those who meet the requirements.
Out of Class Expectations and Commitments
Students are expected to take part in all practical activities and trips. Where they miss a trip, students are expected to provide a medical certificate to explain their absence, and to allow for the possibility of other assessment.
Where Does It Lead?
The advanced levels of study in Physical and Outdoor Education open up opportunities for a wide range of possible careers in the field of Recreation, Teaching, Sport, Coaching, Tourism, Adventure and Community Leadership. The leadership and social skills gained and outlined in the profile will be very helpful when applying for jobs.
